Monitor Upgrade
« on: March 01, 2014, 03:21:38 PM »
I'm looking for suggestions on a monitor upgrade.  Do any of you own a Asus VG278HE?  Do you have any recommendations?

Thanks!

sum1 is gunna recommend u a 144hz monitor probs but since u want a 27" they dont sell 27" ( newegg.com )  , personally id rather get a 2650x1440p now , but they're around 700$-900$ unless you get a Korean PLS panel  and/or with Thunder Bolt Display which can be cheaper...

This is my primary monitor now.  I like it but I'm looking at going up to 144hz.  I have a 24 inch as a secondary monitor that runs at 1920x1200.

Everything I have read says that the Asus 144hz is much better than the BenQ which is really the only other option in my price range right now, but there are now 240hz in the pipeline.

I think the 240hz is for 3d nvidia vision technology. Which sure it is 240hz but does it perform well against that 144hz Asus for gaming ? Basically what I am trying to say it research to see if it performs as well in video games than besides 3d technology.

It really depends what you are looking for in your monitor.  If you only care about competitive advantage in games get something with a high refresh rate.  If you want more accurate color reproduction, sharper image, and better blacks get a PLS/IPS display.

IPS Pros:
2560x1440 (I can't live without this any more).
MUCH better colors.
MUCH better viewing angles.

IPS Cons:
Lower refresh rate.
Lower response times ~7ms range.
Expensive if you want featured monitors.  Korean/monoprice options are fine but don't have the features like Displayport or on screen displays.

TN Pros:
Very fast response times
Very high refresh rates
Cheap full featured monitors available.

TN Cons:
Poor color accuracy
Terrible viewing angles.  At 27" you can start to see color distortion at the edges of your monitor from directly in front of it just because of the bigger angle from your eyes to the edge of the monitor.  This isn't really a problem at 24"
Contrast/Blacks not quite as nice as IPS panels but not that bad on high end models.
Currently not a lot of high resolution options.

My advice is that if you are going to be trying to do work/be productive get a 2560x1440 monitor.  The picture is a lot better and the extra resolution is absolutely worth it.  If you just want to game get a 144hz asus monitor.

I have a VG236H, QNIX QX2700 and a Monoprice 2560x1440 IPS.  I hardly use the asus monitor because it looks so shitty next to the IPS monitor.  I can deal with the lower refresh rate for the better image.

for gaming purposes, is the 144hz monitor worth the $300?

yes, i think i have a distinct advantage playing with a 144hz over someone with a 60hz. When it comes to players cutting across corners, I feel like I have the advantage.

What do you play on?  I only have an X-star, which I've read will overclock to at least 96 if not higher, though I haven't tried yet.

I'm totally cool with not dropping 800 on a monitor.

Well to be fair there's a lot of hype with this new tech and secondly for a 1440p monitor is about 600$ for a decent panel

I have the 27' Dell Ultrasharp UQHD and I think it was 650 but I edit video and photography with it, so color and clarity were main focus on the purchase and I didn't want to spend 1000 on apples version.  It is a kickass monitor and when I played AA using my laptop on it, it was gorgeous.  Displayport is awesome.
